THE JOB.
The homeowners had not used the pool in years, the cage had corroded through in several places from salt-air exposure, and they wanted usable yard space with the option to add a covered patio later. That last detail decided the method: because something might eventually be built over the footprint, this had to be a full removal rather than a partial fill.
The pool was drained per local discharge rules, then the cage and deck came out first to open access for the excavator. Removing the deck before the shell is what keeps the surrounding pavers and landscaping intact.
The full gunite shell was broken out and extracted along with all rebar and plumbing lines. Leaving plumbing in place is a common shortcut on cheap pool fills and it creates voids that settle later.
Backfill went in as compacted lifts rather than a single dump, with compaction checked between layers. The footprint was finished with topsoil, graded to drain away from the house, and handed over sod-ready.
